QUALE AMICO IN CRISTO ABBIAMO - di Joseph Scriven
(10 September 1819 - 10 August 1886)

Joseph Scriven nacque nel 1819 a Dublino, Irlanda, da genitori benestanti. Si laureò al Trinity College di Dublino. Da giovane voleva seguire le orme del padre nella Royal Marine, ma la sua salute cagionevole non gli e lo permise. All'età di venticinque anni, decise di lasciare il suo paese natale ed emigrare in Canada. I motivi di questa decisione sembra furono da una parte l'influenza religiosa dei Fratelli di Plymouth, che lo portarono ad allontanarsi dalla sua famiglia, e dall'altra la morte accidentale della sua fidanzata che annegò la sera prima del loro matrimonio.

"Quale amico in Cristo abbiamo" non era destinato ad essere pubblicato. Dopo aver appreso che sua madre si era ammalata gravemente e non potendo tornare nella lontana Dublino per farle visita, le scrisse una lettera di conforto e abbinò alla lettera le parole di questo inno. In seguito una rivista religiosa pubblicò questa poesia e qualche tempo dopo Scriven morì.
